Still a very young film festival, g-niale film festival was founded and organized in Stralsund for the first time in August of 1999 as a community project of garage g e.V. and the Film Club Blendwerk e.V. The film festival is set up primarily to present new short films that, quite independent of their technical mode of expression, respectively fit under a specifically innovative theme. Above all, our festival is geared to present and preserve the genre of the short film, a form of cinematic expression that you can scarcely find in the regular commercial program at the cinemas. The g-niale presents a film programme away from the mainstream. Accordingly, above and beyond the competition programme, we are seeking to present experimental films, silent films with musical accompaniment, and specifically thematic programs that would form the basis for, as well as help to launch, a repertory arthouse in this region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the Baltic Sea.

The forth edition of the international short film festival runs form 14 until 17 August 2002 in the harbour area and in the impressive Middle Age nave of the church St. Jacob Stralsund.
The topic of 2002 is: ”playground“. Presented will be films, which examine the principles of play on a substantial or formal basis, films, which are influenced by games, experiment with playing techniques (tempo, rhythms, noise) or tell about playing.

Altogether 268 films were submitted, coming from Germany, France, USA, Canada, Croatia, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Great Britain, Sweden, Japan, Spain, Israel, Austria, Australia, China, Mexico, Argentina and Poland.

The jury of 8 members chose from film material of over 30 hours 23 films for the competition programme. Short films, animations, documentaries and experimental film compete for the Bronze, Silver and Golden “Message in a Bottle”, which will be awarded by an experts’ jury, and for the audience prize.
