Atari Noise (Arcangel Constantini, Mexico)
Game as an art object

An old 2600 Atari video computer system is hacked and modified to become an audiovisual noise pattern generator keyboard. An interference made between the ROM (game cartridge) the stella chip (processor) and some other components result in an almost infinite quantity of RANDOM audiovisual noise patterns that can be played in real time. The user of atari-noise, by pressing the keyboard push buttons, generates a deconstruction of the game information. The game's rules and tactics disappear no more - game over or points to make - the project is an immerson into the infinity of the resulting patterns into order / chaos, existenze, zen. The user has no control over the patterns. That's an accident created by interference they can control, by a certain degree, the behavior of this patterns. Interference is a process from nature's code deeply inserted in every entity of the universe. Evolution has thought this process to human kind by shaping our surroundings we are learning to control the code.

Painstation (playing object by Tilman Reiff and Volker Morawe, Köln) (tbc)

Yes, the painstation does exist. And it's not only a construction, a machine, an automaton. No. It's rather the prophet of a future, not necessarily peaceful, but more-efficency-civilisation. The painstation is an arcade cabinet. The opponents stand facing each other. The duel is based on pong, the well known game of console tennis from the early days. The instructions are easily explained: The player’s right hand uses a knob to control his pad. The left hand has to remain on the PEU (Pain-Execution-Unit), so it creates an electric circuit. The game can start. Moving the paddle vertically the ball must be subtly returned into the opponent’s direction. If a player misses the ball, it’s not only annoying but also painful. This slip causes massive anguish. How massive depends on which PIS (Pain-Inflictor-Symbol) the lost ball hits: heat, lashes or electric shocks all of different duration and combination torment the left hand (the new name of "pang” comes to the authors’ minds). In case one of the competitors lifts his hand off the PEU - either out of painoverload or he blacks out - he loses the duel. And sorry to say, he has to bear the "loser’s brunt”. The winner gets it all: the respect, the booze and the sexual attention. The next time someone urges you politely to choose the weapon, choose the painstation.

stairway to heaven (Die TonLeiter) (Christopher Bauder. Berlin)

A ladder normally has only one function and that is to extend physical reach. The ladder is only taken out for a short use. After that it's put back in a dark corner again, where it resides, ignored.
If the ladder is extended with a melodic function, it will develop into a real musical instrument. The ordinary ladder transforms into a sound ladder. Stepping on a bar of the ladder creates a sound or tone which is different from rung to rung. So you can create a piece of music by stepping up and down on the ladder. Together with a partner you can even play a duet.

2,3+12 (Installation by Alexej Paryla. Berlin)

Basis is a simple board game. A fixed room contains a gambling table with a board game. Depending on luck and skill the room around the player changes. Every move, every constellation of playing figures changes the parameters of the room. Light and projections, music and sounds are controlled by a computer reacting to the player’s moves.

2. Online / Games

_] [ad] [Dressed in a Skin C.ode_ (mez aka Mary-Anne Breeze. Australien)

The online projects documents selections of writings or, to use the artist's terminology, "wurks" - highly condensed pieces written in "mezangelle", an invented hybrid language, which mixes syntactical snippets of programming languages, network protocols and markup code with the English language. The resulting texts can be read in multiple, often contradictory ways due to their elaborate use of ambiguity and compound ('portmanteau') words noted in rectangular brackets, thus resembling regular and Boolean expressions in commandline programs and programming languages. In contrast to a merely ornamental code chic, this hybrid language is used to expose and deconstruct the epistemological politics engendered into seemingly "ne!utral", technical codes. It is poetically dense, involving and difficult, but also humorous.

Connex I/0 (Matze Schmidt, Sebastian Stegner, Sascha Pogacar. Berlin/Kassel)

Gaming and collaboration for the open writing space. The collaborators use a text pool, which is filled by them and from which a projected text film is sampled via a game console. An audio reader can also be filled with text material via the console. The samples are then read by a speech synthesizer. The user has access to the text pool both locally and via www. I Know Where Bruce Lee Lives (skop.com. Berlin)

"I Know Where Bruce Lee Lives" is an audiovisual online remixer using samples of Bruce Lee-movies. It portrays the legend of Bruce Lee, the invincible Asian warrior, who in his popularity has become a cultural icon. The piece utilizes different visual and acoustical elements of KungFu-movies and allows the user to playfully deconstruct the narratives and myths surrounding the Martial Arts-legend Bruce Lee. Different scenes of the Kung Fu-master and his film-opponents can be triggered, scratched and remixed via mouse and keyboard. Several music-tracks can be chosen as an audio-background while typographic animations support the frantic fight sequences. These animations are actual transcriptions of the various sounds into equivalent Chinese characters. The iconography of these characters fuses with the crude charm of Martial Arts-movies and their dodgy gangster talk dialogues. Users can interact thereby with movie-elements in an experimental way, become a Flash-movie director and create their own KungFu-clip!

./Logicaland (re-p./m.ash/unrast. Österreich)

./logicaland] is a project study for visualizing our world’s complex economical, political and social systems. [./logicaland] tries to engage people into strategies of raising human sensibility and responsibility within the global networked society. the challenge is to develop ideas, tools and visualizations that fit the requirements of complex correlating systems and our world's complex participative environment. [./logicaland v0.1] participative global simulation [./logicaland] v0.1 is the first attempt of a work in progress to realize a prototype of a global simulation that is to be controlled by a community of unlimited participants.
Based on a scientific global world model of the mid-seventies, modified and hacked to fit our concepts, we developed a tool that facilitates people to take part in a simulation, unlike tools in the scientific field which are neither participative nor public.
The main idea is to provide a public web-based world-simulation within a participative environment, where all users have equal influence on the system. Everyone with internet access should be able to participate in [./logicaland]. One user's influence on the system is minimal since it is a fraction of all participants' actions. only if a lot of users follow similar strategies, serious change can be achieved.

Magnus-Opus (Nigel Helyer, Jon Drummond. Australien)

Phone users be warned. Each time you dial a number, you have performed a musical piece and may have infringed the international copyright of the composers. Sound artists Jon Drummond and "Dr Sonique" have done the unthinkable - rubber stamped the "melody" of every possible telephone number combination as their own. Their Magnus-Opus is a playful way of challenging copyright law, which Dr Sonique - better known as artist Dr Nigel Helyer - says often benefits the "corporates" before creators of artistic works. Sixteen two-note chords were thrown into an algorithmic generator, which produced 10 billion melodies. "It is not without reason, therefore, that we claim to be the world's most prolific composers," the site proclaims. Coincidentally, it says, some of the melodies - copyrighted in 1974 in London - correspond to tones used in phones, modems and other Internet devices. Anyone can plug in their number and see if their melody is in use. If so, anyone who dials it is infringing the artists' copyright. The site provides application forms for licence agreements which can be filled out.
The work, Helyer says, "turns the power relationship on its head". "It comes from someone at the bottom of the food chain, speaking from the point of view of someone at the top."
