Festival garage 4 August to 1 September 2001
garage understands itself as an open space
for the production and transmission of art/culture. It is workshop, open
studio and realm for experiments. It wants to enrich the cultural landscape
of the town, reveal potential and demand and support art projects especially
of the younger generation. garage is interface between inside and outside
in two ways. Firstly, the attraction of the region is to be used to invite
artists to realise projects, organise workshops or to perform in Stralsund.
Secondly, the activities of the festival are set up to make the town of
Stralsund more interesting for visitors.
With our work we consciously confront the local social problems and cultural
vacancies. garage tries to define the character of the one-month-festival
as diverse and currently relevant through the choice of a certain topic.
To explore the role of art and media within the social context, to disclose
herein tasks and possibilities, to look behind positions and expectations,
is subject of our work. In the last years we have been focusing on interconnection
with similarly working projects and artists within the European context.
Topic 2001
between image and sound
"The eye is the master, the ear a slave" (Jakob Grimm) - the dominance
of the visual over the acoustic perception is omnipresent in cultural history.
Naturally, they also condition and influence each other. The function of
the whole perceptional instrument is sensually and physically only possible
when both interact. What happens for instance, if one withdraws the acoustic
or visual component from a spacial perception? How does the space change?
Or what happens, if both traces of perception are desynchronized? The relation
between sound and image is transient; sight and hearing are part of a structure
that can take on new forms again and again - in respect of space, time and
content.
In respect to the omnipresent media discussion we want to consciously focus
on the mono media and thereby debate the relation between hearing and seeing
under the aspects mentioned above. The discussion can be held on a theoretical
or content basis, or in the context of an exhibition or performance. The
main emphasis will lie on the discussion of new concepts of sound and image
production/ manipulation and their presentation/ mediation/ distribution,
also in comparison to "classical" forms of art production. Additionally,
we will investigate new possibilities of the synthesis resp. the juxtaposition
of image and sound; especially explore their role and use in the internet.
Testing the relevance and efficiency of art beyond its aesthetical end in
itself and the question of the role of the transmitter and receiver of the
"data work" are an essential part of the programme.
The fesitval will present 4 weeks of exhibitions, concerts, discussions,
film screenings, workshops, which can be summarized under the following
main topics.
[1] sound without image - or the image in the
mind
The main emphasis will lie on the discussion of new concepts of sound production/manipulation
and their presentation/ mediation/ distribution. An excursion into the world
of tunes and sounds is going to present concerts, (live) radio plays, sound
installations, radio art and net audio projects.
[2] image with sound - or the picture on the
wall
3rd international shortfilm festival "g-niale"
The topic of the "g-niale" is related to the main festival as
a conscious discussion concerning individual media and their interaction
with film and beyond. Thereby illustrating seeing and hearing in a wider
sense by emphasizing or consistent dropping of one of the two elements.
[3] sound and image - or the image within space
From monomedia to multimedia.
Media breaks, interaction und collaboration, border crossing and synthesis.
Attempts to visualise sound and to set images to music. |

a digital soap opera - Dwane
Tommy Filipowicz (Sweden)
Room installation. 6 x mac classic (SE) and 6 black-and-white-stories
between image and sound.
"Dad, what does a picture of a sound, sound like?"
A movie about the the difficulties of talking about the most import
issues with your parents. Story: 58 pictures, that until now has only
existed to what soundwaves look like, unexpectedly gets the opportunity
to show what they themselves sound like.
"I never thought it would go this wrong."
A brutal depiction of merciless living conditions. Story: a picture
fights an uneven struggle for survival. Its appearance is rejected
and distorted. Will it ever be shown in its proper condition?
"It´s like that, and that´s the way it is."
The events in the movie have never taken place.
"We thought that we would be stronger together."
Drama: two computerfiles are put together to form a new file. The
future looks promising. But the process wears the relationship out,
and it is finally drained of substance.
"No, I´m not going to understand what you are saying."
A tragicomic depiction of how onesided values lead to a bizarre view
of the world. Comedy: a computerfile enters an alien system, gets
missinterpreted and is percieved as nervous white spot.
"You mean that silence doesn´t... exist?"
What is silence, and what does it look like? Story: one minute of
silence is amplified until it is forced to show its right face, in
both sound and picture.
amorphoscapes - Stanza
(UK)
Online audio-interfaces. Interactive audio visual digital paintings
and drawings for the internet.
AMORPHOSCAPES move away from 'linear' pieces into a more non linear
and interactive experience giving the audience some control over the
artwork. AMORPHOSCAPES allows you to experience different artworks
depending on how you choose to navigate. As well as this non linearity,
some of the pieces change over time. Evolving pieces exist, that the
"user" has to control of and makes them work by movement.
The user also can input changes of sound and picture. This change
in the relationship between the audience and the artist changes our
perception of the artwork. It is this concept of the individual functioning
simultaneously as 'producer and consumer' that underpins the nature
of AMORPHISMS. The user can choose what they experience. Amorphoscapes
are audio visual generative digital paintings. In the future to be
projected onto buildings on clothes and on cars . They incorporate
user defined areas. Users can control the sounds and pictures and
change their amorphoscapes when they get bored with them. Or watch
them change themselves, on your plasma canvas wall.

WALK - Willem de
Ridder (Netherlands)
An audio adventure through the town.
Willem de Ridder is something like a living legend. In the Netherlands
he is mostly known fof his spectacular radio projects: he directs
situations by radio announcements. Protagonists of these radio performances
are all those listeners who want to be distracted and led by it. Willem
de Ridder is media personality, radio artist, ex-Fluxus organiser
for Northern Europe, publisher, pornographer and master
storyteller.
On a public place in the town a WALK will be installed. This place
can be a buildung or a single room, it can also include the whole
town area. Participants/visitors receive only a walkman with instructions.
The tape leads them to an accustumed or completely unknown place and
makes them experience a new, active adventure. Since the participant
will very quickly identify with the voice on the tape his perception
changes (the stories take place in his head).
The participant is alone during the WALK. At some points it is absolutely
dark, so that the instructions become very important. At other places
one has to llie on a bed, to sit on a chair, to wait for someone who
wont come, or to sit in a taxi, to step on forbidden areas,
etc.
Manipulation, illusion and storytelling a play with expectations,
with the seemingly known, with perception and its relativity in space
and time.

Dave Krooshof
Ernst van der Loo
Leon Spek
Anne Wellmer
Jeroen Opstelten
There are 4 teams of musicians and a referee. All teams have their
own little island in the room. The islands are interconnected so that
teams can sample and process eachothers sound material. The teams
introduce themselves with a short performance of max. 5 minutes each.
During these performances, the teams can gather sound material by
sampling eachother to enter the sonic warzone with when the game starts
off.
The game is played with an installation of switch-boxes and lightbulbs
that are all connected to a "brain" of electric switches.
Each team is provided with a switch-box with which they can vote for
one of the other three teams. If a team has two or more votes, the
brain will make it's sound audible and switch on a light. Also, there
is a "joker" (as in a deck of cards) that will give 4 minutes
of solo-audibility. It can be used only once and the teams have to
wait for their turn, indicated by a red light.
In really urgent cases, teams can ask the referee for audibility by
pushing the request-button on their switchbox.
All teams are also provided with a mini-camera that can be bent in
any direction. The images of the cameras are mixed and processed live.

The Tallest Tanker
curated by Sabine Breitsameter in cooperation
with the Acoustic.Space.Lab Symposium
(Irbene, Lettland)
Two sites - two festivals - two artists. Garage and acoustic space.lab.
Harbour Island and radio telescope. 150 min
Co-streaming between Stralsund and Riga.
The old East-West-connection: the big water. Short waves and underwater
civilisations. Sea sickness and spinning. Oil tapestries and acid
drains without borders. A gigantic Sowjet oiltanker, which once
exploded, did not only leave fishes in the net, belly upwards, but
manipulates until today streams and substreams in the Baltic sea.
The world's tallest tanker has dissolved to a oscillating electromagnetic
play of the waves. Landlubbers are invited to diving sessions. But
nothing can happen without security measures and surveillance. The
participants might not understand the play immediately, but will
find themselves involved unexpectedly.
"The possibilities of the networks motivate audio and radio
artists to explore the Internet as a new space for acoustic art
forms. Inspired by the concept of connectivity audio plays come
into being, which invited the recipients to participate creatively.
The artist's role is, to develop situations and start processes,
in which the listeners can become active in an aesthetic way. Art
as a fixed entity dissolves by that in a multifaceted play with
constellations and communication. Audio plays in the Internet show,
in which way digital networks can initiate a reorganisation of the
senses and a new orientation of perceiving and understanding."
Sabine Breitsameter (Berlin)
Sabine Breitsameter is radio producer, festival curator and university
lecturer. Her focus is on experimental radio, radio art and sound
art and non-European cultures. As a radio producer she is - for
the radio drama department of Southwestgerman Radio SWR - responsible
for the webpage "Audiohyperspace", a monthly online programme,
which ttraces interactive audio art in the digital networks and
explains in radio programmes (on air as well as online) aesthetic
and technological backgrounds. In preparation for March 2002 is
an interactive radio piece and online installation by the
Japanese multimedia artist Atau Tanaka.
As curator for international festivals and symposia Sabine focuses
especially on the topic of "listening" and "Acoustic
Media Art". She directed the Festival "All Ear - Symposium
in Listening", which took place 1997 in Kassel, parallel to
the Documenta X and got a "Special Recommendation" of
the international media prize "Prix Europa". She has been
teaching experimental radio, radio drama and audio production at
the Bauhaus-University Weimar, the Kunsthochschule Weissensee, Kunsthochschule
Halle and the University of Illinois (CAVE).
In 1996 she was invited by the Goethe-Institut and had a residency
as a composer in Vancouver. Numerous lectures and presentations
on "Radio and acoustic art forms in the age of digital networks"
brought her for example to Chicago, London, Amsterdam, Toronto,
Banff, and Brighton.
Activities of Peteris Kimelis (PK)
usually are described as belonging to the domain of net or cultural
activism. PK continuously explores methods of intervention and independent
media using soundscapes, netcasting technologies and virtual media-space
as platform for his experiments and researches. His early conceptual
works conceived in collaboration with electronic media laboratory
E-lab include the netcast of "three frequencies" (http://ozone.re-lab.net/festival/peteris.ram),
compilation !R UZ (http://ir.uz.x-i.net/)
and sound sessions and maintenance of net-radio "Ozone"
Collaborative, joint mixed media live performances and netcasting
were carried out within projects "Very Hopeful" (http://very.re-lab.net/)
and "Radio Kit Kat" (http://pk.re-lab.net/kit-kat).
The latest being sound intervention on the board of train Riga-Ventspils
made possible by use of mobile phone line, train radio, special
radio program and broadcasts mix. Post production od "Radio
Kit Kat" resulted in a limited edition of CD - compilation
of netcast's music and soundscapes.
His recent activities have reached a field of pseudo-commercial
branding and anti -consumerism campaign in project "Teashroom"
http://open.x-i.net/
(with Katrina Neiburga & Open)- that took place in form of fictional
give-away-shop in a city space. Paralelly PK continues to work in
alternative media creating web-tv netcast sessions (http://wtv.re-lab.net
http://www.beeoff.se).
THE TALEST TANKER will be carried out as a live performance and
netcasting session linking xxx (the nameof the town) in Germany
and Karaosta in Latvia. Mix of national radio broadcasts and bilateral
pop-samples will be edited and re-composed in live sound density.
PK is a member (associate) of E-LAB http://re-lab.net
and art managament bureau OPEN.

Institut für Feinmotorik (Cologne)
- live - record - remixes
Institut Für Feinmotorik (= institute for precision motoricity)
is a project which is interested in the complex relationship between
the perception of micro-phenomenons in acoustic and visual spheres
and the precisioned stumbling through micro-social behaviour in daily
situations. Their method is "to make almost nothing from almost
nothing."
An issue they are interested in is the acoustic sphere beyond usual
gain signals. The setup consists of six to eight "empty"
record players, which means that no gain signals but the empty or
manipulated lock grooves or the paper labels of the records are played.
Beside that they found some other ways to generate acoustic signals
out of empty record players: household-rubberbands, adhesive tape
and tooth brushes are just a few instruments used to produce different
sounds. The acoustic phenomenon they're confronted with while working
with disturbance acoustic signals is white noise, which replaces "information"
with entropy; but if noise is used in an acoustic arrangement, it
becomes "information" itself.

authors become the audience and the audience can be confronted with
a stage populated by machines only which cant get out of infinitely

staalplaat soundsystem presents
Lebendiges Blau
a dynamic radio play named Lebendiges Blau will be developed for the
festival in Stralsund. It will be an adaption of the film Blue by
Derek Jarman. Lebendiges Blau will be a hybrid between live show,
installation and radio play. It will focus on the main theme of Blue,
that is slowly losing sight, resulting in just a blue light.
This adaptation will use the German dubbed soundtrack as a primary
thread for the public. Live and installation elements will be added,
playing with different senses or mental sensations such as smell,
disorientation and even physical experiences. For this, light, physical
objects and moving sound systems will be created, for example ghetto
blasters mounted on tricycles that children will be driving through
the audience, fm transmitters will ensure a controlled sound. This
will be a work in progress; therefore changes can and will be taken
during the construction.

from scratch #3: amplified body
Snjezana Premus und Ignaz Schick (Slovenia/Berlin)
in cooperation with PTL Ljubljana
"from scratch" is a series of works initiated by Snjezana
Premus with the concept of bringing together artists from different
fields. The theme of this work is the investigation of the body and
sound and how they relate to each other.
In a phase of extensive improvisation the authors are experimenting
and searching for possible links of movement and sound. The main tool
is a portable microphone which was used to directly transmit movements
into sounds and noises. The microphone is fixed on the body in different
positions with the result that every movement and even breathing will
create crispy percussive noises. Then a specific catalogue of movements
is created to trigger different rhythms and musical figures. The sounds
are directly derived out of the movement, sampled, slightly manipulated
and played back immediately. Like this a complex dialogue between
the performers and at the same time between the different media dance
and music is created. From this starting point both movements and
sounds are gradually composed into more and more complex and virtuoso
parts. The authors challange themselves to find a movement language
as well as musical material that are on the edge between abstraction
and expression and with which they can create scenes which lead to
surprinsingly emotional and strong atmospheric moments. |
